Important People During the Civil War
During the civil war, there were many significant people that made huge differences that affected the lives of many people. These significant people were Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, and Clara Barton. Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth president of the United States. Lincoln was against slavery, and he promoted equal rights. During the Civil War, Lincoln wrote and put the Emancipation Proclamation into effect. African Americans finally had equal rights. Throughout the entire Civil War, Lincoln desperately tried keeping the Union together. He had to go through drastic measures in order to achieve his goal. For example, Lincoln feared that copperheads, people that were sympathetic towards the South, were a threat so he removed Habeus Corpus. This way Lincoln was a able to arrest the copperheads without a trial.
Another person that was important during the Civil War was Ulysses S. Grant. He was the commander of forces in the Union's western campaign. Grant was able to capture two outposts on key rivers in the west, Fort Donelson, and most importantly he gained greater control of the Mississippi River Valley. Since Grant led so many successful battles during the Civil War, he received a promotion to lieutenant general in charge of all Union forces. After four long years of fighting, Ulysses S. Grant accepted Robert E. Lee's terms of surrender at the Appomattox Courthouse, ending the Civil War. Eventually Grant became the eighteenth president of the United States.
Robert E. Lee was a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and a Confederate general. General Lee made unpredictable decisions and took several risks in order to keep the Union unbalanced. On June 26 he began the Seven Days' Battles, where he obligated the Union to retreat from near Richmond. Lee won several battles, but unfortunately for him he lost the battle of Gettysburg. Eventually, Robert E. Lee had to surrender at the Appomattox Courthouse.
Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson was a confederate soldier. He led the Shenandoah Valley campaign. During the first battle of Bull Run he earned the nick-name "Stonewall." This name was given to him because he stood his ground like a wall when the Union was attacking. Jackson also participated in the second battle of Bull Run where he had a major victory against the Union.
Clara Barton was the founder of the American Red Cross. Since she was a woman and couldn't participate in battle, she helped heal the wounded soldiers. When doctors needed assistance, Clara Barton was there. Barton also helped organize medicine so it was easily accessible to the doctors. Because of Barton's great effort she received the name "angel of the battlefield."
