Ironclads and Weapons
Ironclads were steamed-propelled warships fitted with plates of iron armor that were used during the civil war. The ironclads were some of the first ships in history to be armored with metal and propelled by steam instead of wind. These ironclads played an important role during the Civil War since these ships could carry heavy weapons and allowed for more steady aim of its guns. The ironclads also defeated a large number of wooden war ships.
The union blockade that took place during the Civil War prevented the passage of trade of goods, supplies and arms to and from the Confederacy. The Union Navy maintained or blocked other ships on the Atlantic and Gulf Coast.
Several different weapons were used during the Civil War. Some of the weapons used include knifes, swords, bayonets, firearms such as handguns and rifled muskets that were used by soldiers at close distances. Cannons were effective for a more accurate and further range.
