Women During the Civil War
Women, along with children, had a great significance during the Civil War. Since they couldn't participate in the battles that occured, they aided the wounded soldiers. Women and children also worked in factories and on farms. On the farms, women and children performed daily tasks that were usually done by men. Southern women in particular ran and managed the plantations left behind by their husbands. A specific woman during the Civil War named Clara Barton was given the nick-name "angel of the battlefied." She founded the American Red Cross. Clara Barton organized all the medicine and supplies that were delivered to the battlefield everyday. She helped heal many wounded soldiers and assisted various doctors.
