North vs. South
The North and South both had their strengths and weaknesses. The North had a large navy and many railroads which helped transport weapons and supplies needed during battle. Ninety percent of the nation's factories were located in the North. This gave the Union access to the weapons which were much needed to win a battle. The North also had a large population which gave them the benefit of having more soldiers and people to aid them. Unfortunately for them, most people had no battle skills whatsoever. Men fighting in the war were usually just people who volunteered. Another weakness the Union had was that they had to fight on unknown territories. Since they weren't used to the South's land, some Union soldiers couldn't navigate themselves as easily as the Confederate soldiers could.
The benefits for the Confederate soldiers was that they knew their territory like the back of their hands. They were able to move more quickly than the North. The South also had trained soldiers. They were trained in military school, and they were skilled huntsmen. Unluckily, the South didn't have a large population like the North. Some people didn't even want to volunteer, making the amount of Confederate soldiers very small. The South also had fewer weapons than the North because most factories that produced them were located in the North.
