The Battles
The Civil War was initiated by Confederate troops that attacked Fort Sumter in 1861. Fort Sumter was a federal outpost in Charleston, South Carolina. On April 12, Confederate troops assaulted the outpost resulting in Fort Sumter's surrender.
The first major battle of the Civil War was the First Battle of Bull Run, also known as Battle of Manassas. The battle took place in 1861. The Confederates remained the victors of this battle. The loss of the North caused them to lose hope of winning any future battles.
During the Battle of Shiloh, the Union desired to gain better control of the Mississippi River. Their strategy was to divide the South and retrieve possesion of their land. As a result, Ulyssess Grant (Union) became victorious in this battle. The Battle of Shiloh resulted in about 10,000 casualties. This event was on April 6, 1862.
Andrew Jackson's troops fought Union forces in August 1862. The three-day battle was known as the Second Battle of Bull Run or the second Battle of Manassas. Again, Confederates won this battle.
The Battle of Antietam, that occured on September 17, 1862, was the bloodiest single day battle of the Civil War and of U.S. history. There were more deaths than everyone in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Mexican-American war put together. The Union suffered about 12,000 casualties, and the Confederates suffered about 13,000 casualties. In the end, the Union had yet again another victory.
The Siege of Vicksburg occured in mid May, 1863. General Grant's strategy was to cut off the city and shell it repeatedly. Residents and soldiers were starved. They were in desperate need of food so they ate whatever they could find like horses, dogs, and rats. Eventually the city had to surrender. The confederacy had won the battle.
The Battle of Gettysburg began on July 1, 1863. During this battle, the Union had an advantage. They were on top of Cemetry Hill, allowing them to look down on the confederates. George Pickett decided he was going to initiate an attack. This became known as Pickett's Charge--a failed Confederate attack up Cemetry Hill. The South surrendered and the Union won.
At the Appomattox Courthouse, Lee surrendered to Grant which, after four long years, ended the Civil War. Grant agreed to feed Lee's troops and allowed them to keep their horses. General Lee would also get to keep his sword. Since the South had surrendered, slavery was had officially ended and the South's economy was terribly crippled.
